‘Most of a business’ time and money is spent on marketing’
I’ve either heard or read the above quote many many times, and always find it puzzling at the beginning of my career.
Then, with time, you clearly see why it can be true - if you are self-employed, you can be very good at what you do, but if no one knows it, it’s not going to do you any good…and for me, with an acute dislike for marketing, it was definitely a bit of a bummer to ‘find out’ that you don’t just need to be good at your job - but also at marketing.
I used to be a little resentful about this in the beginning, and spent lots of time trying out ‘active’ methods of reaching more people - from the somewhat outdated distributing flyers to the more conventional posting on social media.
The thing is, I really dislike posting on social media, and using them in general; so I never really put enough effort in it and never stuck with it for a long-enough time.
Then, at some point, I made myself a website and found out that was way more effective - as it only targeted people who were actually interested in what I do, and without any active effort on my part.
This is very basic knowledge, but as always, until you try it it’s not something you actually know…
